Entering a career where I teach children and support their sociological and mental development, I’ve become deeply concerned about the impact of lead exposure on our young ones. In Queen Anne's County, Maryland, many homes, particularly those on Kent Island, rely on well water instead of city water supplies. It's less common now to find lead pipes or causes of lead exposure, yet the risk remains — especially for children under six, who are more susceptible to the harmful effects of lead. This exposure can lead to behavioral problems and learning disabilities, throwing a wrench in their formative years.

Without mandatory testing protocols for public schools and childcare facilities not on city water, these children's safety hangs in the balance. It is vital to ensure that lead testing becomes a regulated requirement, giving families, especially those with lower income, access to testing kits. By doing so, we prioritize their health and educational success early in their development.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), even a small amount of lead exposure can cause serious health issues in children. They advocate for regular testing and preventive measures, particularly in communities relying on well water.

I wish to make lead testing widely available and accessible. This involves implementing regulations that enforce testing in schools and childcare centers and providing families with affordable lead testing kits. Ensuring transparency and spreading awareness on the dangers of lead are crucial steps in this journey. By raising awareness, we can protect our children from the unseen dangers lurking in our water systems.

Let's come together as a community to demand change and prioritize the safety and future of our youth. Please stand with me in urging the local authorities and school boards in Queen Anne’s County to make lead testing mandatory in all schools and childcare facilities not connected to city water systems.

Sign the petition to secure a healthier future for every child in our county.
