The Issue

My littlest sister Caitie passed away from stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. She was diagnosed only one month prior. She was only 33. Caitie's passing has left a void in our family that can never be filled. Caitie was the light of the world. Not only to her family and friends but to her husband and sweet 1 year old daughter. She was devoted to saving lives as a NICU nurse. Her passing was not just a personal tragedy but also a stark reminder of the importance of early detection and proper healthcare coverage.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States, and early detection is key to increasing survival rates. However, the current policies that delay mammogram coverage until later in a woman's life can mean the difference between life and death. According to studies from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, early mammograms can detect cancer in even younger women, leading to earlier treatment options and better outcomes.

Despite the evidence, insurance policies typically don't cover mammograms until age 40 or later, leaving countless women under 40 vulnerable and at risk. Women like Caitie, who deserve the chance for early detection that could potentially save their lives.

By mandating insurance companies to cover mammograms beginning at age 30, we can change this narrative in Wisconsin. This policy change would serve as a crucial step in preventing potentially fatal late-stage cancer diagnoses in young women across the state.

We urge state lawmakers in Wisconsin to take immediate steps to require insurance companies to cover mammograms starting at age 30. This call to action isn't just about coverage—it's about saving lives.

Help us honor Caitie's memory by advocating for early detection and ensuring no more families have to face the heartbreak of losing a loved one too soon. Sign this petition and demand that our insurance companies prioritize the health and future of women in Wisconsin. Thank you for your support.
