As a community, we have been deeply affected by the heart-wrenching school shootings that took place at Apalachee High School, right in our own backyard. This is a tragedy that we do not wish on any community. Through collective action, we can put an end to such devastating events.

We firmly believe that the installation of metal detectors in all schools in Georgia can serve as a significant deterrent and proactive response to possible future threats. A study conducted by the National Institute of Justice demonstrates that schools implementing safety measures like metal detectors have seen a drop in the number of violent incidents (National Institute of Justice, 2017). Such facts make a compelling case for why our schools should follow suit.

The time for change is now. We are #moms4metaldetectors, and we are firm in our belief that the installation of metal detectors will provide an added layer of security, potentially saving precious lives. Additionally, the presence of metal detectors will bring peace of mind to students, parents, and educators alike.

We urge our policymakers to make this mandatory for all schools in Georgia. No child, parent, or educator should live in fear while in a place of education. It is our responsibility to ensure their safety while they focus on learning and teaching.
