The Issue

On March 7, 2022, my daughter tragically lost her life while detained at Genesee County Jail in Flint, Michigan. Her death was investigated internally by the same authorities overseeing the jail and its staff, prompting significant concerns about transparency and accountability. Despite diligent efforts, including filing numerous Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, essential evidence was withheld from me. Dismayingly, crucial evidence was discarded by the jail staff even after explicit requests from my attorney to preserve it.

This lack of independent oversight is not just a personal tragedy—since my daughter’s death, at least five more individuals have died under unsettling circumstances within this facility. Alarmingly, the Genesee County Jail has consistently refused to allow media access or audits by external investigative bodies, leaving families in the dark about the true causes of their loved ones’ deaths.

The need for independent, outside investigations in cases of death, neglect, or abuse within Genesee County Jail is urgent. When jails investigate themselves, they operate in a blatant conflict of interest, often prioritizing their reputation over truth and justice. Public trust is eroded, and families are left without closure or accountability. According to the National Institute of Justice, third-party investigations are essential to ensure impartiality and engender public confidence in the justice system.

In envisioning a solution, we call upon Michigan state officials and the Department of Corrections to legislate mandatory independent investigations in such cases. A robust and transparent system would allow impartial agencies or nonprofit organizations to undertake these critical inquiries. This shift towards objective oversight will foster transparency, hold those responsible accountable, and ultimately prevent future tragedies.

By signing this petition, you stand with us in demanding transparency, justice, and reform. Let us prevent further unnecessary loss of life and restore faith in our justice system. Your signature matters; please support us in mandating independent investigations at Genesee County and all Michigan Correctional Facilities. Sign and share to bring about this crucial change.
