Every child who mounts a horse is exposed to potential risks. Shockingly, statistics reveal that horseback riding is more dangerous than motorcycle riding. While motorcycling injuries account for 0.14 injuries per 1000 hours of riding, horseback riding has a higher rate of injuries at 0.49 during the same timeframe. Moreover, 37% of horseback riding injuries require care for trauma to the thoracic region (chest and upper back area), and a fifth of riders suffer head injuries.

The stakes are high, and our children's lives and well-being are on the line.

What is at stake?

The current situation leaves our young riders vulnerable to life-altering head injuries. Medical Examiner reports consistently reveal that 60% or more of horse-related deaths are caused by head injuries. These tragedies could be prevented with the implementation of mandatory helmet usage.

By neglecting to take action, we are risking the futures of our children and subjecting them to unnecessary harm. It is our moral duty to safeguard their well-being and create an environment where they can pursue their passion for horseback riding without fear.

Why is now the time to act?

The urgency for immediate action cannot be overstated. Helmets have been proven to be highly effective in reducing the risk of head injuries — They can significantly reduce the possibility of head trauma by 70-80%. 

By mandating the use of helmets for children on horseback, we can take a proactive stance to protect our young riders and ensure their safety. Other states, such as Florida and New York, have already recognized the importance of such measures and implemented similar laws to safeguard their young equestrians. It is time for Oregon to follow suit and prioritize the well-being of our children.
