Mandate Greystar Property Management to Conduct Indoor Air Quality Testing in Apartments

The Issue

Did you know your apartment may be making you sick?

We are tenants residing in a Greystar property, Forty55 Lofts. Our lives have been adversely affected due to the presence of environmental toxins in our apartments, particularly an alarming level of formaldehyde. Such levels exceed the guidelines established by respected institutions such as The World Health Organization (WHO), The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), the U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

Despite residents becoming seriously ill and experiencing first-hand the damaging impact of these toxins, our requests for testing and remediation are continually ignored.  Greystar has failed to take responsibility and refused to test. To bring the matter to Greystar's attention, residents have been forced to take legal actions. Meanwhile, Greystar continues to rent these untested units to unsuspecting new residents. In a world where pharmacies ensure our medications are safe, and grocery stores extensively evaluate vendors for quality, why then are landlords not held to the same standards by ensuring tenant safety?

This irresponsible disregard poses a silent threat to the health of tenants in our community and beyond. Therefore, this petition calls for Greystar Property Management to be required to test and confirm their apartments are safe and habitable. We ask, not just for our sake, but for the well-being of all renters.  Please stand with us to hold Greystar accountable. Together, we can force a change for healthier living standards.  Thank you for your support!
