Mandate Full-Time Remote Work Options for Lecturers with Chronic Illnesses in Malaysia

The Issue

I am a dedicated lecturer, passionate about my work and committed to the education of my students. However, I also live with chronic illness - an invisible battle that affects many aspects of my life, including my ability to work in traditional settings. Unfortunately, Malaysian universities currently do not provide equal access or opportunities for full-time remote work. This is a challenge that many lecturers like me face daily.

Chronic illnesses are more common than we think. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 15 million people in Malaysia suffer from chronic diseases (source: WHO). Many of these individuals are professionals like me who strive to contribute positively to society despite our health challenges.

Invisible illnesses often come with unpredictable symptoms that can make it difficult for sufferers to maintain regular office hours. The flexibility offered by remote or hybrid working arrangements can significantly improve our quality of life and productivity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that remote working is possible and can be just as effective as traditional methods. It's time Malaysian universities recognize this and adapt their policies accordingly.

By signing this petition, you're supporting lecturers like me who are battling chronic illnesses but still wish to contribute meaningfully to our fields and society at large. Let's urge Malaysian universities to implement full-time remote or hybrid work options for those affected by invisible/chronic illnesses/pain.
