Mandate Florists & Plant Retailers to Label Plants that are Toxic to Pets

Mandate Florists & Plant Retailers to Label Plants that are Toxic to Pets
The Issue
Loki was a spirited 4-year-old Bengal cat, known for his curiosity and mischief. If you aren’t aware of the breed characteristics, Bengals are known for their adventurous nature, which often has them exploring every nook and corner of their home. My husband had been out of town a lot frequently and decided to surprise me with a beautiful fall bouquet of sunflowers, daisies, roses, and various Lillie’s to show me he missed me and was thinking of me. Loki was generally confined to the upstairs but the very next night Loki got loose. The bouquet, filled with vibrant lilies, became Loki's snack that fatal night. After several traumatic days at the vet on a high flow iv and medications Loki passed away from lily poisoning when his heart started to fail and his kidneys quit functioning.
Lilies, although beautiful to look at, carry a death sentence for felines. Ingestion of any part of the lily leads to acute kidney failure in cats, a heartbreaking reality we faced with Loki. Unfortunately, this is where our story intersects with a larger issue – florists and plant retailers aren’t required to inform buyers about the potential toxicity of plants to animals. My husband said had he know the toxicity of the plants he would have purchased a different bouquet or gift.
It's shocking to find out that potentially dangerous plants are sold without so much as a warning on them. According to the Pet Poison Helpline, lilies are just one of several common plants that can cause severe illness or death in pets. Other toxic plants include sago palm, tulips, azaleas, and many more.
We can't bring Loki back, but we can protect other pets from suffering the same fate. It's time to change the status quo. We are urging lawmakers to mandate all florists and plant retailers to post warnings about plants that are toxic to pets before purchase. This simple step can save countless pets' lives. We want no other family to experience our pain of losing a beloved pet to something as preventable as this.
Please help us bring about this much-needed change. Sign this petition. Together we can ensure no more pets fall victim to toxic plants.
