Due to the lack of financial education, literacy and planning, students will struggle to deal with real life financial situations because they are not ready and are inadequately prepared. According to statistics, out of the 50 states, there are only five (Alabama, Missouri, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia) that received an "A" grade. Sadly, Hawai'i is not one of them and is currently graded "F". These five states require high school students to take at least a half -year of a personal finance course, or equivalent as a graduation requirement. The courses cover topics about debt and how to use credit safely, saving for retirement, investing, insurance, and learning how to handle financial decisions that occur in a person's lifetime.
Everyone of all ages need to learn financial basics and how to manage their money. Through financial literacy, knowledge and proper planning, students will be able to gain the life skills needed to make smart decisions about their future finances. In an effort to combat the financial struggles that many students face, #ProjectFLHI alongside the National Campaign for Financial Literacy is designed to raise awareness about the problem of financial illiteracy while providing education on practical financial matters.
Our goal is to disrupt the norm and make positive changes leading to a better and brighter future, and to increase financial wellness among the people of Hawai'i. Our mission is to let the voices of families, businesses and organizations, and most importantly, our children be heard and speak loud to get the attention of the State of Hawai'i legislature to implement MANDATORY financial education and literacy into the Hawai'i's public school system. Let’s be proactive and empower our youth together so they may be great stewards for their financial futures within their communities. WE WILL make a difference and bring vital change within the course of Hawai'i’s history.
As of 2018, Hawai'i's population has grown to 1.45 million.
#ProjectFLHI is a grassroots financial literacy movement created by a group of dedicated local volunteers on a search and rescue mission to educate, and continue to raise financial literacy awareness across the State of Hawai'i. To learn more about this movement, visit ProjectFLHI.org.
