Mandate Federal Minimum Wage for All Congress Members

The Issue

In the United States, a staggering wage disparity exists between members of Congress and an average American citizen. Currently, the base salary for a Congressional representative stands at $174,000, far exceeding both the median American household income of $68,703 and the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour (source: Census Bureau and U.S. Congress). Yet, these elected officials are responsible for representing the majority of Americans, many of whom earn significantly less. Implementing a federal minimum wage for Congress members could improve their understanding of the struggles faced by the average American citizen, further integrating economic realities into their policy decisions. We, therefore, urge the relevant authorities to enact a law requiring all congress members to be paid the federal minimum wage. We believe this action will foster stronger empathy with constituents and a more nuanced approach to creating policies concerning wages and living standards. Please sign this petition to push for income equality and a more representative Congress.
