The Issue

When I was looking for a hamster cage, I was appalled by the tiny enclosures labelled as suitable and recommended by Pets at Home. These cages, shockingly, do not meet the ethical measurements outlined by the RSPCA. How can it be right that such large companies in the pet industry are allowed to promote unsuitable living conditions for animals?

In the UK, pet owners trust retailers to provide not only the basic necessities for animals but also to care for their welfare. Unfortunately, many cages being sold currently are far smaller than the RSPCA's recommended sizes. For instance, the RSPCA advises that a hamster cage should be at least  100cm x 50cm x 50cm high, yet many enclosures in stores are considerably smaller, compromising the animal's quality of life and health.

Animal welfare is a priority for our society, but this is contradicted when the products available don't align with ethical standards. Hamsters and other small pets like guinea pigs, rabbits, and birds require enough space to roam, exercise, and explore, which is crucial to their physical and mental well-being. Providing ample space helps prevent stress, obesity, and various ailments associated with confinement.

The government needs to intervene and establish regulations that ensure all pet cages sold meet or exceed the RSPCA's minimum ethical measurements. By doing so, we would enforce higher welfare standards across the country and set a precedent for pet care that aligns with our values.

Our animals deserve better. Let's make a stand for stricter standards and ensure our pets live in conditions that promote their health and happiness. I invite you to join me in urging the UK government to mandate these ethical dimensions for pet cages. Please sign this petition to help effect change and protect the well-being of our beloved pets.
