Mandate Delivery Companies to Leave Packages at Individual Condominium Doors

The Issue

Losing valuable packages is something I, and unfortunately many others, have experienced. Our packages were left in the central mail room or outside on the main entrance of the condominium we live in, where they fell victim to theft. This situation led to feelings of violation and frustration due to losses that could have easily been prevented. Hence, we urge for a change in the laws that govern package delivery.

Delivery companies - including prominent ones such as UPS, FedEx, and Amazon - currently have policies of leaving packages in central mail room areas, especially in condominiums. Strata properties have posted signs asking delivery drivers to NOT leave packages in mail rooms due to theft and loss, but those notices are ignored by delivery companies.

While leaving them in mailrooms and entrances may be more convenient for their drivers, it puts the packages, often containing valuable or essential goods, at higher risk. According to a recent survey by FedEx, they found that 70% of online shoppers worry about package theft, and one in 10 online shoppers don't shop online because of it. Another survey  by FedEx Canada found that one in four Canadians have had a package stolen, with the number being even higher in Alberta. Having personal deliveries left at individual doors could greatly decrease this statistic.

We believe that a legislative amendment requiring all delivery companies to (A) drop packages at the front door of a customer's condominium AND (B) take a picture proving it's the correct door number as well as mandate that they (C) cannot leave the packages outside the front entrance or gate that opens to the street and must (D) document that they have made multiple attempts to deliver if they can't get building access and (E) contact the customer to make alternate arrangements if access can't be granted, can decrease theft and loss incidents significantly. This will not only save citizens from trauma but also lessen insurance claim hassles for both consumers and companies.

Let us work together to ensure the security of our personal goods and bring about positive change in the delivery industry. Please, sign this petition and contribute to making this much-needed amendment a reality.
