The shocking rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata serves as a grim reminder of the persisting horrifying nature of sexual violence towards women and children in India.

Every day, heart-wrenching reports of rapes of toddlers, children, young and old women, abound in digital and print media across our nation. The brutality and inhumane nature of these vile actions have reached a critical mass, indicating an urgent need for effective changes in our legal and social approach.

While there is a clear need for enhanced education and outreach towards our men in families, schools, and organizations, it's become necessary to bring about change from the top. The Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita  (BNS, 2023) prescribes punishments for rape (Section 63-70), with the minimum sentence to be 10 years, potentially extending to life imprisonment or death in the most extreme situations. However, lenient sentences, slow court processes, and unenforced laws persist to embolden such horrific crimes.

In light of these offenses and the rising graph of sexual violence, this petition is an appeal to the Indian Parliament to prioritize the safety and dignity of women and children across the country. We urge lawmakers to put aside their political differences and consider making the death penalty mandatory for rape offences.

We cannot stand idle while the society we live in threatens the safety of over 590 million women and children, who comprise almost half our society. The time to act is now. We need stricter laws, swifter judicial action, better law enforcement, and effective implementation of laws. 
Remember Aruna Shanbaug- the nurse who was sexually assaulted and was in a vegetative state for 42 years while the rapist got 7 years of Jail !! Is that fair ? 
That’s why we need to get rid of such criminals. Nothing can be a more compelling reason for capital punishment for rapists.
