As a parent who once had to utilize a veterinarian's scale for an accurate weight monitoring of my son, I can tell firsthand the gap in our healthcare system when it comes to caring for non-weight bearing patients. Currently, many primary care providers (PCPs) and pediatric clinics do not have suitable facilities to accurately weigh patients who are not weight-bearing due to various health and physical conditions. This is not just a personal issue; the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends regularly monitoring weight as a crucial part of managing many health conditions. Without accurate measurements, diagnosis and treatment can be hindered, ultimately affecting the quality healthcare that patients receive. We need to mandate a change in this system. We, therefore, urge the responsible health authorities to enforce a requirement for all PCPs and pediatricians to have convenient solutions to weigh non-weight-bearing patients.
