Mandate Communication Between Parole Boards, Courts, and Domestic Violence Victims

The Issue

This petition is deeply personal. On March 13 2024 my sister was violently attacked in her home. My nephew lost his life as a result of this horrifying act. We are calling for a change in the law to ensure that prison parole boards communicate with courts and victims of domestic violence before granting parole.

It is an unfortunate reality that many victims of domestic violence live in fear even after their abusers have been incarcerated. The current system does not require parole boards to consult with these victims or the courts before granting parole, which can lead to dangerous individuals being released without sufficient consideration for the potential risks involved.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder, use of victim services or contraction of sexually transmitted diseases (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence).

By requiring communication between all parties involved - including the courts that sentenced these individuals and the victims who suffered at their hands - we can help ensure that no one is blindsided by a sudden release. This change will provide an additional layer of protection for those who have already suffered too much.

Please sign this petition today to demand better communication between prison parole boards, courts and domestic violence victims before granting parole. Let's make sure our justice system truly serves those it's meant to protect.
