On February 19, 2020 our family was struck by tragedy when our beloved daughter lost her life after falling through an unsecured septic tank lid near Corpus Christi, TX. This devastating incident could have been prevented if there had been warnings that were easily noticeable on the lid or the lid being a noticeable color itself.

Unfortunately, what we faced is not an isolated incident. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hazards like this cause a significant number of fatalities and injuries annually (CDC). These tragic incidents often involve children and could be easily prevented with clear warning labels and safety practices.

Currently the ONLY warnings on these lids are green, raised letters and the entire warning fits in a 3 inch circle. The warnings can barely be read even if you're looking for it and only says that there is poisonous gas present.  We firmly believe that mandating easily noticeable warnings on all septic tank lids could prevent future tragedies. Raising awareness about the dangers hidden in plain sight can make a significant difference. This is not about placing blame, but about making our environments safer for everyone, especially the most vulnerable - our children.

We are calling on local and national regulatory bodies to enforce clear, understandable warning labels on all septic tanks. It is a simple, cost-effective solution that could save lives.
