Mandate Carbon Emission Labels on All Clothing and Textile Products in Australia

The issue

We are a group of Monash University Law Students who are conscious consumers, deeply frustrated with the high cost of purchasing sustainable fashion due to the lack of industry-wide standards in Australia. We believe it should be the standard for companies to produce sustainable products, not a luxury only a privileged few can afford. The guilt should not be on the consumers who are simply trying to buy within their budgets.

Despite the growing demand for sustainable fashion, there is currently no legislated, standardised label in Australia that measures and discloses the carbon emissions associated with the production of clothing and textiles. This lack of transparency makes it more challenging for consumers to make informed purchasing decisions in support of the environment.

Voluntary labels like Ethical Clothing Australia (ECA) provide information about environmental practices, but none of these labels directly address the carbon footprint of individual garments. It's high time that changes. It's a fact that the fashion industry contributes to around 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions due to its long supply chains and energy-intensive production processes (source: United Nations Environmental Programme).

The government needs to recognise the dire impact of the fashion industry on our environment and enforce legislation on carbon labelling for all clothing and textile products. This step will ensure full transparency and enable consumers to make informed and responsible purchases.

Join us in calling on the Australian government to make carbon labelling on all clothing and textile products mandatory. In addition to this petition, we have a website which further outlines why this initiative is needed.
