Mandate Bible or people's oath for U.S. officials
The Issue
Throughout my life, I've cherished the values taught in church and the principles enshrined in the Constitution, believing that they aren't mutually exclusive. It was a painful and enlightening moment for me when I realised that government swearing-in ceremonies often don't align with what I perceive to be the foundational tenets of our nation as a Christian community. It’s time to recognize the importance of these tenets by mandating government officials swear on the Bible or, at the very least, on their allegiance to the people, reflecting the essence of our country's core belief system.
The United States was founded on the principle of religious liberty, but it cannot be denied that a significant proportion of the population identifies as Christian. According to the Pew Research Center, about 63% of adults in the U.S. identify as Christian as of 2021. Having government officials swear on the Bible serves not merely as a ceremonial act but as a profound connection to the moral fabric that many Americans feel keeps our society rooted in justice and freedom.
Moreover, for those who might not adhere strictly to Christianity, an alternative oath based upon allegiance to the people allows for inclusion while still holding truth and accountability at its core. This respects the diverse fabric of beliefs in our nation, while upholding a common ethical standard expected from our leaders.
