Mandate All Rentals in Alberta to Allow Dogs Irrespective of Breed, Size, and Weight

El problema

Like many residents in Alberta, specifically Calgary, I am a single person attempting to juggle the high cost of living with a longing for a furry companion. The current rental policies have made this nearly an impossible dream, as rules regarding dog ownership are hindering almost every pet lover from owning a dog, and single-income individuals like myself are hitting the hardest.

For countless people, pets are more than just animals; they are family. Yet, stringent pet policies are impairing our ability to experience the joy and companionship that a pet can bring into our lives. According to the Canadian Animal Health Institute, it is estimated that nearly 7 million dogs live as domestic pets in Canada, demonstrating that being a pet owner is the norm, not the exception. Yet, here in Alberta, the housing market does not reflect the desires and needs of potential pet owners.

Data from the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association puts the number of dogs in Alberta at over 900,000, which is a significant segment of the population. We are not asking for undue accommodation, only the ability to live with our pets in peace.

By signing this petition, we appeal to the Alberta Residential Landlord Association and property owners to change their pet policies, allowing all breeds and sizes of dogs in rental apartments. This would not just humanize our housing options, it would also align them with the realities of life in the 21st century. Embrace a more open pet policy and allow single-income individuals like me to fulfill our longing for a furry companion. Please sign this petition and help bring about change. Now is the time to take action!
