The Issue

Most public buildings in the UK, including shops, community centres, schools, and workplaces, are not required to have air conditioning despite the increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves we face. Between May and September, temperatures often soar above 30 degrees Celsius, and these extreme weather conditions have become almost an annual event.

As someone who has personally experienced the discomfort and health risks associated with lack of air conditioning in public spaces, I believe it is imperative for the government to address this oversight. It is not just a matter of comfort; it's about safety and well-being. Vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly at risk during these heatwaves.

Installing air conditioning in all public buildings would ensure that every individual has access to a safe and comfortable environment. Moreover, increased heat due to climate change is something we must prepare for proactively. In addition to providing relief from high temperatures, air conditioning can also help improve air quality, which is critical for public health.

A government mandate for air conditioning would not only mitigate the impacts of heatwaves but also set a global example of adaptation to climate change. It would demonstrate a commitment to the health and safety of all citizens, ensuring that public spaces can effectively serve the communities that rely on them.

Join me in urging the UK government to take prompt action in introducing legislation that requires all public buildings to be equipped with air conditioning as well as heating. Let us protect our communities from the rising temperatures and ensure comfort for everyone.
