Mandate Adequate Living Standards and Record Keeping for Dog Breeders

The Issue

Dogs, our beloved companions, are often subjected to poor living conditions by unscrupulous breeders. Some states have no laws regarding the subject at all.

This petition seeks to mandate that all dog breeders maintain adequate living standards for their dogs and keep comprehensive records of their care. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Adequate nutrition and potable water for all dogs
  • Adequate space appropriate to the age, size, weight, and breed of dog
  • Adequate socialization with other dogs and with human beings
  • Age-appropriate exercise
  • Veterinary care without unreasonable delay when necessary
  • Dogs must have protection from the elements
  • Grooming and identification of all animals
  • Sanitary and well-ventilated dog enclosures
  • Maintenance of records and reports
  • Isolation for dogs with communicable diseases
  • Segregation of different puppy litters
  • Dogs must meet a minimum age to sell
  • Banning the use of wire flooring in dog enclosures
  • Commercial breeders must provide tracking for their dogs

According to the Humane Society of the United States, thousands of puppy mills exist in the U.S., housing hundreds of thousands of breeding dogs in substandard conditions. These animals deserve better. By enforcing higher standards and requiring record keeping, we can ensure that every dog is treated with the respect and care they deserve. It's time we hold breeders accountable for their actions and create a safer environment for our canine friends. Please sign this petition to demand better regulations on dog breeding practices.
