Mandate Accessible Parks for Children with Special Needs

The Issue

As a parent of a child with autism, I understand the challenges faced by many families in our community. My daughter, along with her classmates and other children, are often limited to places they can visit due to their unique needs. Some children have a tendency to elope and run away; having parks that are fenced-in would significantly reduce the worry of parents or guardians about their child's safety.

Galveston County is home to many children who have special needs. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, approximately 1 in 68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These kids deserve safe and accessible recreational spaces just like any other child.

We need our city officials to recognize this pressing issue and take action. We propose that Galveston County designates certain parks as accessible for kids with special needs such as autism. These parks should be equipped with appropriate facilities and safety measures like fencing, sensory-friendly play equipment, quiet zones among others.

By doing so, we not only provide these children an opportunity for fun and exploration but also allow parents/guardians some peace of mind knowing their loved ones are safe while enjoying outdoor activities.

Let's make Galveston County and surrounding communities more inclusive for all its residents. Sign this petition today urging our city officials to create accessible parks for our special needs community.
