Mandate a Nation-Wide Bereavement Leave for Employees

The Issue

As someone who experienced a traumatic personal loss in 2023, I, like many others, had to face the daunting task of picking up the pieces of my life without my spouse. It took me two months to adjust to my new reality, all while battling the burdens of managing estate affairs with no financial assistance from my employer. I was lucky to have had life insurance in place, but too many aren't so fortunate.

In the US, their is no Federal law regarding bereavement leaving companies to choose. Allowing them to get away with just three days and no pay. This added financial stress can exacerbate the grieving process. I propose to create a federal law that mandates businesses to allow at least a month long bereavement leave and two weeks paid to get affairs in order and adjust. This should be applicable on an immediate family member's death.

Additionally, we should allow a week off with no pay for bereavement of non-immediate family members, for travel time and proper grieving.

A Harvard Business Review report showed that employees who are allowed a proper grieving period are likely to be more productive and less likely to depart the workplace, leading to less employee turnover. The well-being of our people should be placed at the center of our nation's work policies.

Help us help employees face the toughest time of their lives with dignity and without added financial stress. Sign this petition to promote fair, compassionate bereavement leave rights.
