Mamdani: Don’t Erase D.E.I. From NYC Policy

The Issue

New York City voters supported a clear commitment to addressing racial inequities across government. That commitment led to the creation of a legally mandated Racial Equity Plan — meant to directly name problems and outline real solutions.

But recent reports show that references to “diversity, equity, and inclusion” were removed or softened in the final version of the plan, in part to avoid potential federal conflict.

This raises a serious concern: when key language is stripped away, accountability can be weakened. New Yorkers deserve transparency and clarity — especially on issues as important as fairness, opportunity, and equal access to services.

This is not about politics. It’s about ensuring that a plan created to address inequities is clear, honest, and reflects what voters asked for.

We are calling on New York City leadership — including the Mayor’s Office and the Commission on Racial Equity — to restore clear and explicit language in the Racial Equity Plan and uphold the full intent of what New Yorkers voted for.

A strong plan requires clear words. New Yorkers deserve nothing less.
