Climate Action Plan to Save Kolkata

The Issue

Are you feeling the heat in Kolkata?

Does your locality gets water logged more frequently every monsoon?

Do you notice an increase in frequency of cyclone ? Foni, Amphan, Yass, Jawad and now Asani.

As per the latest reports, Kolkata is the fastest-warming city, and the Increase in warming is the highest in Kolkata globally.

Kolkata heat rise worst in world, IPCC global warming report finds

Warming in the city increased by 2.6° C. It might NOT sound like a lot but remember, when you measure your body temperature, the difference between 99 and 100 degrees and 101 and 103 degrees is also just 1 and 2 degrees, but we are well aware what that does to your body.

Indian cities in dire need of Heat Action Plan, writes Smruti Koppikar

I have lived in #Kolkata and have never experienced such harsh weather conditions. The frequency and intensity of cyclones, massive flooding, and deteriorating air pollution are concerning.

DISASTER DEATHS, SINKING: UNPREPARED KOLKATA FACE MULTIPLE CLIMATE RISKS, WARNS IPCC REPORT

#Kolkata is a highly vulnerable city, as per most reports.

We are NOT doing enough. We include ALL of us.

#Kolkata needs a time-bound, actionable, evidence-based Climate Action Plan for the city.

Mumbai has recently launched its Climate Action Plan.

In a Webinar organised to commemorate Earth Day, Anjal Prakash, lead author of the Working Group II report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said  "The city must have its climate action plan, both to mitigate the anthropogenic activities accelerating climate change and also to save its massive populace from the impacts of climate change."

Kolkata’s greenery quotient is also one of the lowest in the country. It is highly vulnerable to sea-level rise. All these stats are scary and must create a sense of urgency.

There is some optimism, and our public transport system got an elaborate mention in the third installment of the sixth assessment report by the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC).

The most significant report on the global climate crisis referred to the city’s public transport network as an “illustrative case study” to showcase integrated climate action.

I find hope and have trust in our leaders and that if we all come together with the help of experts and follow an action plan, we can mitigate some of the risks and adapt to the changing scenarios. We all need to come together.

Recently Mumbai established itself as the first Indian city as well as the first South Asian city to create a mitigation plan for potential climate disasters.

The Mumbai Climate Action Plan seeks to provide a robust road map in the run-up to 2050, which is the deadline set by the city’s administrators to achieve zero emissions.

Global Earth Day: Mumbai has a plan to tackle climate change. Here’s what you need to know

As a concerned citizen of Kolkata i strongly feel my city Kolkata must also come up with an action plan for our city. A multi stakeholder coalition should be formed to align all efforts for climate action. We all need to act to save lives of our people.

Please support this petition to appeal to the Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal Smt Mamata Banerjee and Honourable Mayor of Kolkata Shri Firhad Hakim to launch a City Based Action Plan for Kolkata.

Please save us and our city. It is climate emergency.
