Calling All People with Disability and Families in WA - NDIS/My Way Call for Action

We, the people with disability in Western Australia and their families, want the best scheme for Western Australia.  We don't yet know if that is the WA State based scheme, My Way, or the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The Turnbull Government indicated today that 'it may allow WA to operate its own disability services within a national framework.'

There has been increased pressure from Government and some providers to reject the idea of completing the NDIS/My Way WA trial and to adopt the State’s scheme under a Federated model under an agreement between State and Federal Government.

In the absence of any input from people with disability or families about which is a better scheme to suit the needs of Western Australians, this is a bad decision.

Under a secret deal between State and Commonwealth, the two schemes will not be independently evaluated and trialed.  WA is only a third of the way through a state based trial which would independently assess which was the better scheme and how learnings could be pushed from one to another.

WA plans to cut the amount of funding to every Western Australian with disability by an average of $10,000 (less than the NDIS average) and there are indications that the My Way scheme will result in poorer outcomes in choice and control, with significant concerns about the workability of the scheme in regional and remote areas.

Preliminary evaluations and conversations are currently being carried out by advocacy agencies, disabled persons organisations and people with disability themselves and they indicate that there are good and bad aspects in both schemes.  There is no evidence that a State based scheme will be a better scheme for people with disability and their families and there is no evidence that a ‘State-chosen’ scheme will enable the trial learnings which are preferred by people with disability to be pushed from one scheme to another.

We literally have no voice in this discussion.  We want the best scheme for people with disability and their families, and we want to be the ones who decide what is best for us.

SIGN THE PETITION for a commitment from State and Federal ministers to stick to their original promise, which was to fairly evaluation the two schemes and see which worked best for people with disability and their families – not just others with vested interests in the sector.  Give Western Australians with disability a fair trial.
