Rental Waiver for Business Owners During Movement Control Order (MCO)

The Issue

What happens if tenants can't pay rent on time

Malaysian Government announces another round to close all non-essential businesses for two weeks until 1 June till 14 June.

We welcome this action to slow the spread of Covid-19, but what happens if tenants face financial difficulties or income loss due to this and cannot pay their landlords on time?

Many business owners struggled to come out from MCO's first and second stages to recover their business expenses and recover by getting more financial assistance to settle their owing.

Under the ongoing stress, many business owners shut down their businesses and claim they cannot continue their business.

Many tenants in malls face a significant issue settling their rental when the Government imposed the MCO, CMCO but not issuing any assistance of advice to corporate sectors to resolve these issues on an amicable basis.

Some operators take advantage to seek full rental and strictly demand to pay the full rental using legal terms and to send lawyers to notice.

Paying a rental without performing any business while the economic sector is closed, there is something to be rolled out by the Government immediately to assist and save the company in Malaysia.

Recent announcements of information derived from the Hotspot Identification by Dynamic Engagement (HIDE) system on claims that HIDE's Covid-19 hotspot also has affected the mall operators suffering from massive traffic, and this has seriously affected the tenants to continue operating their business after the 3 days sanitation start operating without traffic. This occurs when the government announces strict rules for economic sectors for work from home (WFH).

Upon referring to some business owners, some have approached the government agencies such as MITI and PMO but none of this department willing to help those eagerly needs help.

At this Lockdown, we can't stay on the legal terms. The government should come forward and identify a solution to save the business owners from continuing to stay during this challenging time.

We need more business owners to show their concern, ideas, and support to sign this petition to raise the suffering undergoing by business owners. We need MITI and PMO  to come out with a solution to gives a special waiver for those who are affected.

Without government involvement, we cannot resolve these issues as part of the mission to make business sectors sustain continuously. Millions of ringgit have been invested by many business owners in many businesses, but we can't afford to lose those businesses just because of pandemic crises.

All we can change by having close support from the government to identify the ways of solving the issue between tenants and owners.
