Making Ludhiana’s Electrical Infrastructure Safer
The Issue
Ludhiana is my home and like many residents, I have often noticed tangled wires, leaning poles, damaged electrical equipment and transformers placed close to roads, buildings and busy public spaces. These problems are not limited to Ludhiana, but this is the city where I live and where I have personally seen how haphazardly planned or ageing infrastructure can affect everyday life.
Electrical infrastructure usually receives attention only after a power cut, a failure, a fire or an accident. By then, the damage is already done.
Why this matters
It can be fatal. Exposed conductors, fallen wires and damaged insulation cause electric shocks and electrocution. During rain, dust storms, thunder or water logging, the danger gets much worse. One low-hanging wire near a footpath can be deadly for anyone walking past.
It can catch fire. Electrical faults can lead to fires. Overloaded equipment, damaged cables and poor electrical connections can overheat, increasing the risk of fire. In crowded markets or residential areas, this puts nearby people and property at risk. Tangled or abandoned wires can also make faults harder to locate, delaying repairs when every minute counts.
It disrupts essential services. A single electrical fault can disrupt power to hundreds of homes and businesses. Hospitals, water pumps, traffic signals, schools and small shops can all be affected without warning. Most residents cannot tell whether a wire is live or abandoned, which is why regular inspection and timely maintenance are essential.
What we are asking for
We are asking PSPCL, the Municipal Corporation Ludhiana and telecom operators for four things:
1. Regular inspection of high-risk transformers, cables and poles, based on their condition, load, and location.
2. Faster correction of visible hazards like fallen wires, sparking equipment, leaning poles and oil leakage treated as emergencies, not backlog.
3. Stronger preventive maintenance — checking load, temperature, insulation and connections before failure and not after.
4. Predictive maintenance — the most important ask. Using IoT-based sensors and AI to monitor transformers in real time, so developing faults are caught days or weeks before they become failures.
Preventive maintenance means inspecting and servicing equipment regularly before it fails. Predictive maintenance uses real-time condition data to detect problems that a scheduled inspection may miss. Ludhiana needs both.
Why I am raising this and Why you should sign
I grew up around the transformer industry and I am currently working on a project exploring exactly this kind of early-detection technology. But this petition is not about one product or one person. It is about a public safety issue that affects every single resident of this city
Many of us have simply learned to work around tangled wires, unsafe equipment and repeated power disruptions. But safe and reliable electricity is not a privilege, every resident deserves infrastructure that is properly planned, regularly maintained and safe to live around.
This petition is a civic initiative to show that the people of Ludhiana care about safer streets, reliable electricity and accountable public infrastructure.
The proposed steps- regular inspections, timely repairs, better coordination and predictive-monitoring pilots are practical and can be introduced gradually.
Add your name and help urge the responsible authorities to act before the next accident and not after it.
