Make zines available at Columbus Metropolitan Library
The Issue
Zines are unique, self-published works that cover a diversity of voices and topics often underrepresented in mainstream media. They play a crucial role in broadening perspectives, celebrating subcultures, and providing a platform for marginalized communities to express themselves. Unfortunately, the only zines available at the Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) are in special collections that are not easily accessible to the public. There is also an absence of zine centered programming at 2026's Columbus Book Festival.
Zine Club Columbus wants to work with CML to make zines accessible to library patrons by making a permanent zine section and increase zine programming at the Main Library.
Zine Club Columbus is a volunteer-run community group that invites folks of all experiences levels to make + share zines and connect with their local zine-community. We hold all of our Zine Studio meet ups at CML branch locations including the Main Library. Our Zine Studios are where people learn to make their own zines using traditional and digital methods. Zine Club Columbus also collaborates with local organizations for zine fests, readings, and workshops to introduce folks to various types of zines and ways to participate.
Zine Club Columbus is asking for...
- A permanent zine section at the Main Library.
- Program collaborations with Zine Club Columbus.
- Zines included in next year's Columbus Book Festival programming.
Columbus is a vibrant city with a rich tapestry of cultures and creative communities. Yet, the limited availability of zines in our public library system hampers the ability of residents, especially young and emerging creatives, to access diverse and alternative literature. Collaborating with Zine Club Columbus at CML would not only enrich the library's offerings but also encourage literacy, creative expression, and community engagement.
A sustainable and actionable way to bring zines into the library is to allocate specific funds from the library's budget towards acquiring zines and support programming. Collaborating with local zine fests, underground presses, and artists can bring community involvement and ensure the acquisitions reflect current trends and local interests. Additionally, hosting workshops and events centered on zine-making can foster creativity and provide dynamic learning experiences for library users of all ages.
Let us come together to enhance our library's collection and ensure it maintains its role as a resourceful and inclusive space. By committing to bring zines into the Columbus Metropolitan Library, we are taking a step towards celebrating and preserving diverse voices. Let's make a difference in our community and inspire others with the power of alternative literature.
Sign this petition to show your support for making zines a part of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Together, we can highlight the importance of diversity and creativity in our public libraries.
