Make Washington state government positions non-partisan
The Issue
In today's political world, there's a troubling trend - people are increasingly voting along strict party lines. This entrenched partisanship creates barriers, stifles open dialogue, and impedes bipartisan cooperation. I truly believe that a key solution to fostering a more collaborative political climate is to rid our government of these partisan divides. By starting small and focusing on the state of Washington, we can set a precedent for the rest of the nation.
Currently, candidates across various government positions in Washington state are aligned with specific political parties, which often dictates the direction of their policies and decisions. This partisan approach can lead to gridlock, where crucial issues are left unresolved as representatives are more committed to party agendas rather than constituents’ needs.
By making all elected positions in the state of Washington non-partisan, we can create an environment where officials can work together to address the needs and concerns of the people, fostering a government that is accountable and directly responsive to the diverse electorate. When candidates are not bound by party affiliations, they are more likely to engage in meaningful conversations, forge collaborative partnerships, and implement practical solutions that truly benefit our communities.
According to a 2021 Pew Research Center study, 63% of Americans believe that our country would be better off if elected officials were not part of political parties. This statistic illustrates the growing public support for non-partisan governance as a way to bridge divides. In Nebraska, for instance, the state legislature operates on a non-partisan basis, and this model has been effective in promoting balanced and effective lawmaking.
The movement toward non-partisanship is already gaining momentum. We have an opportunity to build a future where government is truly by the people and for the people—beginning right here in Washington. It’s time for us to take a stand and lead the way for the rest of the nation.
Sign this petition to support making all government positions in Washington state non-partisan. Let’s remove the partisan boundaries and return the power to the people, where it rightfully belongs.
