Dear Supporter,
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
With the benefit of a break and some rest over the festive period, I did some further digging into why the UK stands alone when it comes to making crossing our own streets so hard to do.
Here are some fun facts (the third fact blows my mind):
- Ireland, March 2024 - amended its rules for zebra crossings by removing the requirement for Belisha beacons, and instead has adopted an international crossing design (photo)
- Poland and the Netherlands stopped using beacons in the 1960s (and they both have excellent walking and cycling infrastructure in many towns and cities)
- The only countries which now require Belisha beacons are the United Kingdom, Singapore and New Zealand.
- That makes just three countries out of 195 (and just 1% of the global population) who constrain our engineers in making our streets hard to cross. Just 3.
We in the UK are in a small and diminishing group. At it's most simplest, it just would require Heidi Alexander, the new Secretary of State for Transport to sign off a change to the rules.
Simple really.
Have a great January (and please share this petition far and wide)
