Make video game preorders more accessible and fair
The Issue
I've missed out on countless Pokémon card drops, which annoys me, but now it's moving onto video games. I wanted to preorder the Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Dagdan Edition, and I checked for preorders after the Nintendo Direct announced it and found nothing. The next morning, I checked again, and all preorders were sold out and closed. I called several GameStops, and they said they closed preorders less than 24 HOURS after they opened. Preorders used to be about judging demand and supplying towards that demand. Now it's just "what scalper can get to it first and jack the price up 200+%" and that's really disheartening as a collector who's not in this for profit. Now I go on eBay and see a hundred entries for the presale, which eBay claims is against their TOS, yet they still allow all these scalpers to sell on their platform. It's frustrating to see these editions going for no less than $200 when $119.99 is the official retail price. Every collector should have the opportunity to acquire the items they love without having to fight scalpers at every turn. It's disheartening, to say the least, that this happens every single time we try to buy something we're excited about. This seems to be a Nintendo issue too, as the Persona 4 Revival special edition preorder is still up everywhere a week and a half later. This inconsistency raises concerns about how preorders are being managed. Scalpers are exploiting fans' enthusiasm, which undermines the purpose of preorders – to gauge interest and meet that demand. Therefore, we urge Nintendo and other video game companies to take a stand against scalpers and make preorders fairer and more accessible. We recommend implementing systems to ensure preorders remain open longer and are limited per customer, to allow true fans to secure a copy. Partnerships with retailers should ensure more robust anti-bot and anti-scalper measures, creating a fair marketplace for fans and collectors alike. Please sign this petition to call on Nintendo and other stakeholders to ensure a fair chance for all fans to obtain their desired games and collectibles without being priced out.
