The Issue

As a transgender woman and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, I see firsthand the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in our community. Recent federal developments, including the proposals outlined in Project 2025, threaten to criminalize aspects of LGBTQ+ identity and target transgender individuals specifically. These policies could have devastating consequences for LGBTQ+ people in Ventura, especially youth and families, who are already vulnerable to discrimination and marginalization. Without proactive protections, our friends, neighbors, and loved ones could face unjust scrutiny, persecution, and harm simply for living their truth.

If we fail to act, Ventura risks becoming a city where LGBTQ+ individuals do not feel safe or protected. Federal policies could force local agencies to participate in discriminatory actions, endangering the freedoms and rights of residents based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. However, by adopting a sanctuary policy, Ventura can take a stand for inclusion, ensuring that local law enforcement and city services refuse to cooperate with harmful federal policies. We have the opportunity to designate safe spaces, protect public institutions, and invest in resources like legal aid and mental health support to uphold the dignity and safety of LGBTQ+ residents.

The urgency cannot be overstated. With Project 2025 gaining momentum and the Republican president-elect appointing its authors to key cabinet positions, the likelihood of anti-LGBTQ+ policies becoming reality is increasing. We cannot afford to wait until these policies are enacted to take action. California has a proud history of standing up for civil rights, and Ventura can lead by example by becoming a sanctuary city for LGBTQ+ individuals. By acting now, we can send a powerful message that our city values diversity, inclusion, and the safety of all its residents. Let’s protect Ventura’s LGBTQ+ community before it’s too late.
