Throughout my years at the University of North Texas, I struggled with the cost and convenience of parking. Despite being a student with regular commitments on campus, the high cost of parking passes remained a challenge. Moreover, the more affordable option -- Lot 20 located a half mile away from any classes -- still posed a significant financial burden. Often, I was left with no choice but to park against the curbs, accruing expensive citations over time. 

This struggle is not exclusive to me; many students are caught in a similar predicament. According to the Fall 2022 Student Financial Wellness Survey (SFWS), just under half of all college students reported that parking is always available on campus when they need it and increased parking fees can lead to transfers, doing business elsewhere, or being late to class (https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED638075.pdf

UNT should be a place of learning and development, and not a source of constant financial stress for its students. It's time to address this issue that plagues all student car owners. We are calling for an increase in the provision of parking lots within reasonable proximity to classes. Additionally, we demand for a revision of the parking fee policy to ensure it corresponds to the financial capabilities of all UNT students.
