Make travel insurance mandatory for all travelers

Make travel insurance mandatory for all travelers
The Issue
My stepson, Sam, has sustained serious injuries while in Ayia Napa after a tragic fall from a third-floor hotel balcony. Despite our encouragement for him to take out travel insurance before his trip, he didn't arrange any cover—a decision many young people make, thinking nothing will ever go wrong. As a result of the fall, he has suffered a broken pelvis, fractures to the L4 and L5 vertebrae in his spine, and a broken leg. He’s currently in a hospital overseas, in significant pain.
Sam’s unfortunate situation highlights a severe problem in our society. Young travelers, especially, often overlook the necessity of travel insurance, assuming they are invincible. This oversight can lead to devastating financial and emotional stress on families when the unthinkable happens. Hospital bills in foreign countries can escalate quickly, and without insurance, the burden can become insurmountable.
In recent years, statistics have shown that approximately 25% of British travelers go on trips abroad without any form of travel insurance. This is alarming, especially when there are many unforeseen incidents that can occur, from natural disasters to accidents like Sam's. According to the Association of British Insurers, travel insurance policies often cost as little as £10 for a week-long trip, which is a small price to pay for peace of mind and financial protection.
To address this issue, we propose making travel insurance a legal requirement for all travelers leaving the country. Just like car insurance is mandatory to protect against potential accidents and liabilities, travel insurance should be compulsory to safeguard individuals and families against unforeseen events when abroad.
Implementing this law requires collaboration between government bodies, insurance companies, and travel agencies. We could establish a streamlined process where purchasing insurance becomes part and parcel of booking a trip, thereby integrating it naturally into the travel preparation process. Such measures would not only protect individuals but also potentially save lives by ensuring proper and timely medical care can be accessed without the constraint of financial hurdles.
Join us in making travel insurance a priority and a legal requirement, ensuring the safety and protection of all travelers. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to consider this vital change, and help prevent another family from facing what ours has gone through.
