Total War: Shogun 2 is one of the most beloved games in the Total War series and has maintained an active community for more than 15 years. Many of the people still playing it today bought the original game, purchased its DLC, created and maintained thousands of mods, made content around it and helped keep Shogun 2 alive long after its original release.

Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition brings 64-bit support, improved visuals, modernised controls, higher-resolution UI scaling, more than 50 newly playable factions and a new modding ecosystem. These improvements could breathe new life into one of Total War’s greatest games.

Creative Assembly and SEGA have already made a positive step by giving existing Steam owners any legacy DLC they are missing for free and offering a 75% loyalty discount on the Complete Edition. However, that discount only lasts for one month. After 15 years of loyalty from Shogun 2’s players, offering just one month of loyalty pricing in return doesn’t feel like much of a reward. Once that window closes, someone who has owned and supported Shogun 2 since 2011 could be asked to pay full price to move to the new version.

What we are asking is simple: give existing owners of Total War: Shogun 2 the Complete Edition at no additional cost.

Doing so wouldn’t just reward long-time players. It would immediately bring more people into the Complete Edition, encourage returning players, strengthen multiplayer and give modders and content creators a much larger audience. This is especially important because mods from the original Shogun 2 will not be compatible with the Complete Edition, meaning the community already risks becoming divided between two versions of the game as it did with Total War: Rome Remastered.

At the same time, the original Total War: Shogun 2 should remain available to purchase at an appropriate price.The original game has supported a huge modding community for 15 years, and those mods will not be compatible with the Complete Edition. New players should continue to have the option of buying the version those thousands of mods were built for rather than seeing that ecosystem effectively locked behind a delisted game.

We also believe the full £34.99 / $39.99 price of the Complete Edition is too high for what is being added. Once the one-month loyalty period ends, existing owners who want to move to the new version will face that full price, while new players will have no cheaper way to buy Shogun 2 if the original is removed from sale. Keeping the original available at an appropriate lower price would preserve an affordable entry point to Shogun 2 and its enormous existing mod library, while allowing the Complete Edition to exist as the enhanced option for those who want it.

There is precedent for making Total War’s definitive experiences more accessible. Immortal Empires originally required ownership of all three Total War: Warhammer games before Creative Assembly opened it to all Warhammer III owners, while continuing to sell additional races and Lords separately.

We believe Shogun 2 deserves the same consideration.

We are therefore asking Creative Assembly and SEGA to give existing Shogun 2 owners the Complete Edition for free and keep the original Shogun 2 available for purchase. If a free upgrade isn’t possible, make the 75% loyalty discount permanent rather than limiting it to one month.

The community has supported Shogun 2 for 15 years. Give those players every reason to become the foundation of its next 15.
