Make the Yellow Dot Program Statewide in Michigan

The Issue

🟡My name is Miranda, and I’m a mom from Hillsdale County. I started this petition because of my 9-year-old son, Elias, who lives with Type 1 Diabetes. His condition requires 24/7 care and attention to blood sugar levels, insulin needs, and emergency treatment. If his blood sugar drops too low or spikes too high, he might not be able to explain what’s happening or how to treat it. That’s terrifying as a parent.

That’s why I believe Michigan needs to expand the Yellow Dot Safety Program statewide. A small yellow decal on the vehicle window and a medical form in the glove box could give first responders instant access to the information they need to save a life — information about medical conditions, medications, allergies, and emergency contacts.

👥 Who is impacted?
This isn’t just about my son — it’s about millions of people across Michigan.

🟡Over 200,000 children and teens in the U.S. live with Type 1 Diabetes.🟡More than 1.4 million Michigan adults live with a disability
🟡Over 200,000 Michigan children have special health care needs
🟡Thousands of Michigan families live with epilepsy, food allergies,  asthma, heart disease, autism, and other life-threatening or life-altering conditions
Every time someone with one of these conditions rides in or drives a vehicle, they are at risk during a crash or emergency. If they can’t speak for themselves, how will responders know what to do? Right now, there is no consistent way to make sure that information is available — unless you live in Muskegon County, where a small pilot Yellow Dot Program currently exists.

 ⚠️ What is at stake?
Without action, families across Michigan will keep facing emergencies without this simple, effective tool to help. Lives are at stake, and the solution is already out there.

States like Tennessee, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, and Utah already run statewide Yellow Dot Programs. These states understand the importance of giving emergency responders the information they need, exactly when they need it.

🟡The Yellow Dot Program is:

Low-cost
Simple to implement
Proven to save lives
All it takes is a yellow sticker and a medical form, and that small step could prevent a tragedy.

⏱️ Why is now the time to act?
Medical emergencies happen every day and chronic conditions are more common than ever. The pilot in Muskegon County proves that this program works. Michigan has an opportunity right now to expand that protection statewide and ensure every family, in every county, has access to it.

We shouldn’t wait for another emergency to realize how much this program is needed.

✅ Let’s take action together.
Sign this petition to support the expansion of the Yellow Dot Program across Michigan. Let’s make sure first responders have the tools they need. Let’s protect the most vulnerable — our kids, our parents, our neighbors — when they can’t speak for themselves.

Let’s do this for kids like Elias. For families like mine. For all of Michigan.
