Make the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Bus an Essential Route

The Issue

I am a member of the community that relies on the tunnel bus from Windsor, ON, Canada, to Detroit, MI, USA. As a disabled person, this bus service forms a crucial part of my support system; enabling me to connect with my support network in the United States, including my American father. Moreover, it's the lifeline that connects me to local events, conventions, and professional sports teams in Detroit.

However, disregarding the needs of people like me and many others, there is a proposal to remove this essential bus route. This, I believe, is not only unconstitutional but also discriminately undermines the rights and needs of the general public who depend on this bus route to earn a living, maintain family ties, and attend to other businesses across the border. Not everyone can afford the alternative private transport services, which, by the way, do not even cross the border.

This bus route is not merely a transportation service but a vital bridge connecting the lives of those living and working across the border. The United Nations convention on the rights of persons with disabilities advocates for accessible transportation as a key element to ensuring equal rights (UN, 2006). By removing this route, we not only risk the livelihoods of many, but also severely compromise the accessibility to rights for disabled persons like myself.

I urge you to consider the larger implications this move will have on us, especially those disadvantaged. Please support us by signing this petition, and make the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Bus an Essential Route.
