Make the UK Safer: Take Stronger Action on Knife Crime
Knife crime remains a serious concern for communities across the country. It affects major cities, towns and local neighbourhoods, and its consequences can be devastating for victims, families and entire communities.
This issue is personal to me because I no longer feel as safe in my community as I believe people should. Hearing about incidents involving knives, and seeing young people carrying blades, has made me increasingly concerned about what is happening on our streets.
People should be able to go about ordinary life — travelling home, meeting friends, going to work, enjoying a night out or simply walking through their neighbourhood — without fearing that an argument or confrontation could escalate because someone is carrying a knife.
In the year ending March 2026, police recorded 48,774 offences involving a knife or sharp instrument in England and Wales. Although this represented a fall from the previous year, almost 49,000 recorded offences is still a significant number and there is no room for complacency.
This petition calls for a comprehensive approach to reducing knife crime. Enforcement matters, but enforcement alone cannot solve the problem.
I want the UK Government, working with devolved administrations, police forces, local authorities, schools and communities, to strengthen measures aimed at preventing knife crime before it happens.
This should include greater investment in effective youth services and early-intervention programmes; education about the real consequences of carrying and using knives; stronger work between schools, families, community organisations and police; targeted action against those who supply, carry and use illegal weapons; and appropriate, intelligence-led policing carried out lawfully and without discrimination.
Young people who are at risk of becoming involved in violence also need genuine alternatives — opportunities, support, education, employment and trusted adults who can intervene before carrying a weapon becomes normalised.
At the same time, people who deliberately carry knives with the intention of threatening or harming others must understand that doing so has serious consequences.
This should not become a political slogan or an argument about one particular community. It should be a shared objective: reducing violence, protecting young people and making public spaces safer for everyone.
No parent should fear that their child may become the victim of knife crime. No young person should believe they need to carry a blade to feel safe. And nobody should have to accept serious violence as a normal part of everyday life.
Please support this petition and call for sustained, evidence-based action to reduce knife crime and make our communities safer.
