MAKE THE ROADS SAFER: RETEST THE ELDERLY @ AGE 62

The Issue

As a young driver, we are commonly believed to be the most dangerous drivers on the road. We're excited, we have new found freedom, and there are teens all over the country facing consequences for abusing this privilege, out of sheer ignorance. What's the elderly's excuse? Their eyes don't work like they used to? Their motor skills aren't as precise? Their hearing isn't as sharp as it once was? What about any of these ailments make you believe this individual is suited for operating a vehicle. It goes without saying that age does not define an individual; but it should also be noted that certain cognitive and motor functions will inevitably decline with age. The elderly have been driving for so long, they have grown a sense of entitlement and immense comfortability on the roads. Even while presently mentally deteriorating, many elderly people continue to drive with little to no precaution, resulting in countless deaths and injuries due to their lack of awareness behind the wheel. In most cases, you receive your drivers license at 16, and from there on after are entitled to driving privileges, that is, if don't revoke your own right. If a man, say aged 75, received his license at 16, he would've received it in the year 1966. I don't believe anyone could go 59 years and maintain the same capabilities and functions they once had in their youth. Now I'm not saying that it's impossible- as there absolutely are many safe, capable elderly drivers on the roads. But there are way too many that aren't- and it is costing people their lives. It should be common sense that a person should be retested on their driving capabilities once they hit a certain age- and what better than the legal age of retirement.  Nobody wants to not see elderly people on the road. It's positively mandatory that those capable of driving, retain their driving privileges. But it should be just as mandatory to have a system in place that can prevent a multitude of vehicular disasters, before the scenario even presents itself. A 15 minute driving test, on a commonly driven road or highway of the 62+ year old's choice, and a highly professional tester allowing the person to drive as they see fit, will determine wether or not this individual is still fit to operate a motor vehicle. If there is refusal, then your license will be suspended until the test is taken. This is a simple request, in response to a fatal problem.
