Make the MBTA Safer

The Issue

The MBTA, otherwise known as the "T," is the public transportation system in Massachusetts. It's considered one of the nation's worst transportation systems due to its countless issues. The trains, buses, and commuter rails constantly have malfunctions and accidents, and it's only gotten worse over the years. In 2024, there were 27 train derailments, more than the past 3 years combined. These accidents hurt people and have taken lives, and they should be fixed as soon as possible.

On top of the issues with the system itself, dangerous people are easily able to enter the stations and the T. These people are under the influence, have drugs, have aggressive behaviors, and can even have weapons on them. Until they hurt someone, these people face no repercussions for their actions. While it's not the MBTA's fault that people like this exist, this could easily be changed by having more security at the stations.

Back in 2023, MassINC poll surveyed 1,000 residents about the MBTA. 70% stated that they felt unsafe. The reasons they gave are the same as those mentioned above: the poor condition of the trains, subways, buses, and the stations that cause accidents and crime.

These things make the MBTA unsafe for everyone, and that's not okay. Everyone has accepted it, and it's become normal to hear about an accident on the T every week. The T should be a safe place for everyone, which is why we want to increase safety on the MBTA by increasing security, having more police present, fixing the vehicles and trains, and having more consequences for bringing dangerous items onto the T.
