It has been years since we have posted an update on this petition, and a lot has happened in that time. With your help, we successfully convinced the Mexican government to permanently ban gillnets in the vaquita's range, an accomplishment that cannot be understated. Unfortunately, illegal fishing persists and has driven the vaquita's population to fewer than 30 individuals. It is not too late for the species, however, as long as enforcement efforts are increased to the point where no more vaquitas are killed by gillnets. There has been some amazing progress, but more is needed. International Save the Vaquita Day 2018 will be July 7, and we will be doing all we can to spread the word about the vaquita and its plight.
