Make the Division & 48th Street Intersection in Wyoming, MI Safe

Make the Division & 48th Street Intersection in Wyoming, MI Safe
The Issue
On 8/31/23, a tragic incident occurred at the intersection of Division and 48th Street in Wyoming, MI. A 16-year-old child was struck by a vehicle while appropriately crossing this intersection using the crosswalk when the child had the right of way. The haunting images of the child's body on the ground and shoes scattered on the road are unforgettable.
As someone who personally experienced nearly getting struck at this very same spot in April 2023, I am deeply concerned about the safety of pedestrians and students from Kelloggsville High School who use this intersection daily. This petition aims to address these concerns and advocate for necessary safety features to be implemented.
It is disheartening to learn that through online discussions and conversations with individuals frequenting this intersection, particularly children, numerous incidents have been reported where people have either been hit or narrowly escaped being struck by vehicles. These stories highlight an urgent need for action to prevent further accidents from occurring.
To ensure that our community members can safely navigate this crucial intersection without fear or risk, we propose implementing several safety features including but not limited to:
1. Install Turn Lights for individuals turning left on 48th to Division. Most of the reported incidents have occurred in the same lane by vehicles rushing to turn on to Division because there is no turn light at that intersection.
2. Enhance Crosswalk Visibility: Improve visibility by adding high-visibility markings or flashing signs.
3. Increase Law Enforcement Presence: Request increased police presence during peak hours to deter speeding and ensure that drivers adhere to traffic laws, especially at this intersection.
4. Implement Speed Reduction Measures: Conduct a thorough analysis of current speed limits along Division Street near Kelloggsville High School and consider reducing them if necessary. Lower speeds will allow drivers more time to react when encountering pedestrians crossing the street.
5. Any other safety measures available to help prevent additional injuries or fatalities involving local citizens, primarily children.
These proposed safety measures are essential for protecting the lives of pedestrians, particularly students attending Kelloggsville High School. By implementing these changes, we can create a safer environment for everyone in our community.
We urge the Wyoming City Council and relevant authorities to take immediate action by allocating resources and funding towards implementing these necessary safety features at the intersection of Division and 48th Street in Wyoming, MI. Let us come together as a community to prevent further accidents and protect our loved ones from harm.
