Make the Cuyahoga County Sheriff an elected position

The Issue

There are 88 counties in the State of Ohio and Cuyahoga County is the only one without an elected Sheriff.

Back in 2010, when a charter amendment changed the sheriff position from an elected one to an appointed one.

Since then, there have been 8 Cuyahoga County sheriffs.

Robert Reid: May 2009 through February 2013

Frank Bova: February 2013 through March 2015
Clifford Pinkney: March 2015 through August 2019
David Schilling (interim): August 2019 through January 2021

Joe Greiner (interim): January 2021 through March 2021

Christopher Viland: March 2021 through May 2022
Steven Hammett (interim): May 2022 through February 2023
Joe Greiner (interim): February 2023 to present

Cuyahoga County has been through so much over the past few years.

The Cuyahoga County Sheriff should be an elected position.  Let the voters decide which law enforcement official they want to run the Sheriff's Department.

Since, having an appointed Sheriff, Cuyahoga County has cost its citizens millions upon millions of dollars in lawsuits.  This has been record-breaking and unfortunate.

Give back the authority to the Sheriff to run their department.

Your position is elected and so should the Sheriff.

This experiment has failed and continues to fail.  We are not trendsetters.  Stop making us the laughingstock of Ohio.

Let the citizens of Cuyahoga County decide who will be their next Sheriff.
