Make the council repair, not demolish, Rose Garden Cafe, Graves Park.

The Issue

The Rose Garden Cafe in Graves Park, Sheffield, UK was built in 1927 as a refreshment pavilion, the Rose Garden itself was built in 1938 to compliment the cafe/pavilion. For those that are unaware, Graves Park was bought for the people of Sheffield by J G Graves, from 1925 to 1936. This iconic part of the park is now owned by Graves Park Charity, which has a single trustee, sheffield city council. The cafe has tenants who rent the space paying back a portion of their profits to the council.

A recent report by the council has condemned the building, stating (we think, though have yet to see the report) that the roof is unsafe. The building is possibly set for demolition rather than repair, most likely due to cost. The council who are the only trustees of the building, who are receiving a share of the profits of the cafe, haven’t maintained a good state of repair.

Rose Garden Cafe has been part of so many peoples lives for so long, it’s hosted support groups, walking groups, parties, families, friends, young people, old people and everyone in between.

By signing this petition you’re adding your voice to let the council know how much Rose Garden Cafe means to you, and that we won’t stand by and let it be demolished when there must be a solution to repair the damage that they have allowed to happen by not undertaking regular maintenance of a building they own.

If we win, if we make our voices loud enough, we’ll have ensured that this building, this community hub, can remain an integral part of Graves Park. The building will be repaired.

If we lose, the landscape of Graves Park will never be the same again.

There is also a crowdfunder running, set up by Friends of Graves Park to try and raise enough money to cover the cost of repairs, you can donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/RoseGardenCafeGravesPark?invite=true
