Make the 2026 "Emerging Liberty" Dime Design Permanent
The Issue
In 2026, the U.S. Mint introduced an exceptional new dime design as part of America's Semi quincentennial celebration. The "Emerging Liberty" dime replaces the Roosevelt portrait with a bold, modern image of Liberty facing "the winds of revolution," paired with a reverse featuring an eagle in flight. It's the first time Liberty has appeared on the dime's obverse since 1945.
The Mint has announced this design is intended for one year only, with the dime reverting to the Roosevelt portrait in 2027.
We believe the Emerging Liberty design deserves to stay and not just out of nostalgia for 2026, but because it's genuinely one of the best pieces of American coin art in decades.
The design has real artistic ambition. Liberty isn't posed as a static allegorical figure; she's caught mid-motion, defiant and unfinished-looking in the best way — "emerging" is the right word. It's a portrait with narrative tension, not just symbolism for symbolism's sake. The reverse matches it: an eagle in aggressive flight, arrows gripped in its talons, under the inscription "Liberty Over Tyranny." Together the two sides tell a coherent story, a far more interesting philosophical statement for a coin to make than a static presidential profile.
This coin captures something the Roosevelt dime, for all its historical significance, no longer does: a sense of forward motion and renewal for the country's currency. Coin designs have changed before. The Roosevelt dime honored a president who championed the fight against polio, and that legacy matters. But the Emerging Liberty design offers a chance to honor the country's founding ideals on a coin that all of us carry every day. We urge the Mint to make this year's design a lasting one.
