The Issue

Terre Haute residents deserve to feel safe on the roads they use every day. Our community has experienced repeated crashes, including serious and fatal crashes, and certain roads and intersections have been identified as having high crash rates. We are asking Terre Haute city leaders to take stronger action by identifying the city’s most dangerous roads and intersections and prioritizing safety improvements in those locations. Possible solutions could include improved lighting, better signage, safer crosswalks, traffic signals, turn lanes, intersection redesigns, traffic-calming measures such as speed humps where appropriate, and increased traffic enforcement. We are not asking for speed bumps everywhere or for the city to stop funding parks and other community projects. We are asking leaders to use crash data to determine where the greatest risks are and use the right solution for each location. We also want residents to have a better way to report dangerous roads, intersections, speeding, poor lighting, and other safety concerns. Our goal is simple: identify the problems, take action, and measure whether those actions actually make our roads safer. We cannot prevent every crash, but we can take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of serious injuries and deaths. Please sign this petition if you believe Terre Haute can do more to make our roads safer.

“Thank you for reaching out about the roads in our community. The city engineer's office works hard to make all the roads safer. As residents report intersections that are less safe, the engineers conduct studies to make the necessary changes for improvements. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
