After presenting our plan for the land swap between the Surfside Community Center and the Champlain Towers South land, the Surfside commission quickly came to the surprising conclusion that they will not continue to entertain this very viable and feasible option. In our proposal, we asked the commissioners to listen to the residents of Surfside and allow them to vote on this matter. The surfside commission decided to take this into their own hands and not give every single resident a voice. Yes, we know not everyone is on board with the idea, but we have also come across countless residents and victim families who stand with us and support the idea.
As the process following the collapse quickly advances, it seems that humanity is being lost. Arguments should not be taking place in such a tragic and painful moment. In fact, we all need to work together as a community to find a solution in making this site a memorial. We are open to listening and to strategically work with other options, but we need to work together. We need the City of Surfside along with the Surfside Commissioners to stand with us and help us. We the victims’ families, are asking both the State and Federal Government for immediate support, but are not being heard or cared about. We need the Governments help in honoring the lives of the 98 victims by purchasing the Champlain Towers South land so we could make a memorial. This purchase will be the end to a fight between apartment owners, residents, commissioners, and most importantly- the families of those who lost innocent loved ones. Though we know it will not bring our loved ones back, it will bring respect, dignity, and honor for those who died. This could have happened to anyone.
