With 98 innocent victims having died in the Champlain Towers South Collapse on June 24th, 2021 it is very painful to see how this process continues to unfold. Judge Michael A. Hanzman has very clearly stated he will go forward with the sale of the land where the towers collapsed in 8777 Collins Ave, without taking consideration any of the lives which were taken and the respect their families are asking for. It is a very shocking scenario to be in, while one would think the country would step in to make a difference and honor the lives which were taken from us, it seems they have quickly forgotten about this deadly catastrophe, which could have occurred to anyone. We, the family members are asking for dignity, respect, and PEACE.
As days go by, it is becoming very clear that money is more important than human life in the United States. We understand this land needs to be sold, as the victims’ families will be compensated from the sale of this land and that is why, almost 3 painful months later, we have proposed a very feasible and viable win-win option on the table for the Surfside Commissioners to approve. The proposal entails a Land Swap with the Community Center in the city of Surfside and the Holy Land where 98 people died. This Land Swap will allow for a developer to buy the land where the Surfside community center currently stands, for an equal or greater value than the Champlain Towers South collapsed land site. Our proposal also offers to build a beautiful new community center along with a memorial to honor all the innocent victims and their families. The Surfside Commissioners are not only completely dismissive of this idea, but also have the audacity to call the families of those who lost loved ones- “Delusional” (Eliana Salzhauer- Surfside Commissioner). This comment is not only disrespectful, but disgusting, and it shows the type of people who have the power to make this happen. It is now in the hands of Surfside to make this somewhat right, after all- 98 people died on their land.
Now it is up to us. The people around the world to make it known how powerful our voices could be. We need to be heard and we need as much help as we could get to make this honorable memorial come to life. Below are the emails to the 5 Surfside City Commissioners who could make the change. We ask if you could please reach out to them and have your opinions on this matter heard. We need a memorial on the site of the collapse and we will not stop until we get one.
