Make snakes a legal exotic pet in the Maldives! (No venomous or large snakes)
The Issue
Calling all reptile enthusiasts!
So the police raided a home of a drug dealer and confiscated a Mexican kingsnake (which they claimed it was venomous, however it's a nonvenomous colubrid snake like the harmless local wolf snake). The point is that there are reptile enthusiasts in the Maldives which love and care for their scaly friends (iguanas are also illegal despite people openly owning them and being common in pet stores). We demand that popular small to moderately large pet snakes like corn snakes, ball pythons and milk snakes be legal. There shall be restrictions on the types of snake however: no exceeding 6 feet in length (this means anacondas and larger pythons are illegal) and absolutely no venomous snakes. The fact that snakes eat rodents should be destigmatized because they're carnivores and must eat meat like chicken or frozen pinkie mice or rabbits (which pet stores that sell snakes should supply or breed themselves). In conclusion: venomous snakes shouldn't be legal (nor should larger pythons or anacondas), but small or moderately large is completely fine as long if it isn't venomous.
Reptile rescue centers shall also be built on islands because many own iguanas and turtles which many mistreat and provide poor care, instead of releasing non native animals which could potentially destroy the ecosystem, send them to reptile shelters which should be built on certain islands.
Snakes can make wonderful and rewarding companions if you provide good care, unfortunately many simply do not research before buying or adopting any animal which results in poor health and even death for many exotic fish (like goldfish and betta fish), birds and of course reptiles like turtles and iguanas. People should do their research before buying ANY pet, whether it's a koi fish or macaw, all animals deserve good care no matter if it's scaly or furry, all animals deserve good care and respect.
